Who We Are

The Canterfield concept was originally created back in the 1980's by Winston Porter. The idea was to create a social model senior housing community that would look and feel like a hotel- not at all like an 'old folks home.' The first Canterfield was built by father and son team Winston and Allen Porter in Atlanta in 2013. The team succeeded in its goal to use its respective strengths in senior healthcare and the hospitality and luxury housing industries to create a senior living continuum that offers unsurpassed services and amenities backed by quality care services. Canterfield is managed by Canterfield Management run by Winston and Allen Porter.

 
Medical Development Corporation

Medical Development Corporation (“MDC”) was the precursur to Canterfield. MDC specializes in the development and management of senior housing and healthcare products. The Atlanta-based company was established in 1990 and has been active in the long-term care and senior retirement housing sector for the last 28 years. Its founder and Principal, Winston A. Porter, MDC and its predecessor companies have developed close to 1700 senior residential, assisted living and nursing home units. Currently the company is affiliated, owns, and/or manages seven properties including Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinics in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida, all of which MDC was primary in their acquisition and development.

Canterfield Management

Canterfield Management is a firm that specializes in managing senior living residences. The company provides management oversight for communities in and around the Southeast. Additionally, they provide receivership services for banks in need. They are proud to be involved with Canterfield and are dedicated to providing residents with a gracious lifestyle within a continuum of care.

Shazia Arroyo

Executive Director

My name is Shazia Arroyo; Canterfield of Bluffton Executive Director. I have been with
the company for 1 year.
Prior to joining the Canterfield team, I worked for Five Star Senior Living for 7 years in
different capacities. Positions served were Executive Director, Assistant Resident
Services Director, and Memory Care Director. I have worked as an Executive Director
in 2 other states, Savannah, GA and Virginia Beach, VA. With a Master’s in Healthcare
Administration, I have dedicated the past 18 years to bringing joy to the lives of seniors,
along with a passion towards providing exceptional care.
I have 2 beautiful children, Anya (15) & Sean (12) who bring joy to my life every day.
Along with my husband Carlos who has retired from USMC after 23 years of great
service we are happy to call SC our home, although originally, we are from FL.
At Canterfield of Bluffton my goal is to ensure our residents enjoy the comfortable
feeling of home, combined with the care, support, and security they need and deserve.

Tricia Thomas

Business Office Manager

Tricia moved to South Carolina in January 2018 from Long Island, NY where she was a pre-school
teacher, and then the office manager for several years at a school for children with special needs. Her
daughter still lives in New York and her son lives in California.

Tricia is a resident of Bluffton and lives
with her partner, Ray the piano man, and their crazy golden-retriever, Selene. “I love the weather down
here in the low-country and enjoy the diversity of my job as the Business Office Manager at Canterfield
of Bluffton. Everyday is something new and exciting!”

Shuntaye Gurley

Director of Marketing

Shuntaye is truly excited to join The Canterfield team and is ready to make a huge difference in the City of Bluffton. She has over 4 years of experience in The Senior care industry and got he first start at Holiday Retirement where she fell in love with Seniors. Shuntaye is actively involved with the Alzheimer’s Association and enjoys being a part of the walk each year. She is committed to helping families make the right decisions when it comes to choosing senior housing, by acting with love, patience, and compassion and her track records proves it. Whether it’s Assisted Living, Memory Care, or Independent Living she has the knowledge and ability to help families choose the right fit for their loved ones. Shuntaye is a native of Beaufort County has two wonderful children and is active in her church that her mother and father pastors.
